Fall fun!!

The leaves are changing and falling down, spooky and silly decorations are going up around town, the wind is blowing a little colder, that must mean it's time for...

FALL FUN!


Friends of the Library Fall Fest - Saturday, October 9 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Visit the Library's parking lot for a large used book sale, fall themed children's activities, and more fall fun! All proceeds benefit the Library. This is an outdoor program and is weather permitting. Please check the Library's Facebook page and/or website for updates. All ages welcome - no registration necessary.





Library Trick-or-Treat Trail - Sunday, October 24 from 4:00 - 6:00 pm*

Boo! Wear your costume for a truly spooktacular after-hours in-person evening at the Library! Sign up for an arrival time slot* to walk through the Library's own trick-or-treat trail. At each stop, play a mysterious game to earn a unique treat! Costumed encouraged but NOT required. Masks are required for all Library visitors over 2 years old. Family Program.

Costume Party Tail Waggin' Tutors - Monday, October 25 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm

Come in costume if you dare to read to trained therapy dogs! Practice your reading skills while enjoying the company of some furry, costumed friends. Make a few Fall crafts while waiting for your turn. Costumed encouraged but NOT required.  Masks are required for all Library visitors over 2 years old. For children ages 4 and up - reading ability encouraged but NOT required.

BOO! Spooky & silly fun at your library!

Happy October! 

It's time for our 
3rd Annual Literary Pumpkin Decorating Contest!!


Work alone or as a group to decorate a pumpkin, real or fake, to look like your favorite literary character using any materials you'd like (but please NO CARVING)! Please bring your pumpkins into the Library between October 1 - October 29, 2019. Pumpkins will be displayed throughout the Library for all the enjoy! Staff members will announce winners on October 30.

Costume Party Tail Waggin' Tutors - Monday, October 14 @ 7:00 pm - Come in costume if you dare, to read to trained therapy dogs! Practice your reading skills while enjoying the company of some furry, costumed friends! Make a few spooky crafts while waiting for your turn. Costumes encouraged but not required. For children ages 4 and up - reading ability encouraged but not required. Please register!

Preschool STEAM: Creepy, Crawly Creatures - Wednesday, October 16 @ 1:30 pm - Explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics found in the world of insects! We'll start by sharing stories together then move around to various hands-on learning stations. A $1 donation per child is requested and will be collected at the event. For children ages 2-5, with a caregiver. Please register!

Teen Halloween Tricks & Treats - Thursday, October 24 @ 3:30 pm - Come make yourself some SCARY good treats! We'll be watching our favorite Halloween shows while making some chocolate covered pretzels to enjoy! A $2 donation per person is requested and will be collected at the event. For teens in grades 6-12. Registration is requested but not required. 

Annual Family Halloween Spectacular - Saturday, October 26 @ 6:30 pm - Boo! Wear your costume for a truly spooktacular after-hours evening at the Library! We'll start by sharing not-so-scary stories then make some sinister crafts, play a handful of mysterious games, and gobble up some frighteningly yummy snacks! Play games while you trick-or-treat around the Library! At the end, prizes will be awarded for most creative costume in different age categories. A $3 donation per child is requested and will be collected at the event. **Library doors will open at 6:15 pm** Family program. Please register!

Happy FALL!

The Pleasant Hills Public Library is happy to announce the 2nd Annual Literary Pumpkin Decorating Contest! 

Decorate a pumpkin to look like your favorite book character using any materials you'd like (please NO CARVING). Work alone or as a group - fun for the whole family! Bring it to the Library starting October 1st but NO LATER than October 29th at 8:30 pm. Winners will be announced on October 30th and will receive a cool gift card!

Family Game Night - Monday, October 8th at 6:00 pm - Bring the whole family for a fun night of games, pizza, and fun! We'll have a variety of card, board, and video games to play together! Fun for the whole family! Please register.

3rd Annual Family Halloween Spectacular Party - Friday, October 26th at 6:00 pm - Do you dare come to the Library after-hours for a truly spooktacular evening? We’ll play games, make crafts, hear stories, and enjoy snacks! There will also be trick-or-treating complete with a costume contest, with different age categories and prizes! A $2 donation per child is requested and will be collected at the event. This is an after-hours program; Library doors will open at 5:45 pm. Fun for the whole family! Registration highly suggested.

Book VS. Movie Club - Monday, October 29th at 6:00 pm - Join us as we watch a movie based on a children's book every month! This month, we'll be watching the movie based on Matilda by Roald Dahl. After the movie, we'll discuss the book and decide which we liked better and why. Extra copies of each month's selection will be available for checkout at the circulation desk. Recommended for families with children ages 5 and up.

Hooray for Fall!

It's officially Fall, even though it doesn't really feel like it. We're excited anyway! We've got tons of awesome programs happening soon so make sure to check out our October Newsletter for more information.

We're excited to announce our FIRST EVER LITERARY PUMPKIN DECORATING CONTEST!!!
Decorate a pumpkin to look like your favorite book character using any materials you would like! Paint it, dress it, accessorize it...but PLEASE NO CARVING! Work alone or as a group (fun for the whole family). Bring your decorated pumpkin to the Library between October 2 - 30 during normal operating hours - there will be a brief form to fill out at drop off. Pumpkins will be put on display throughout the Library.

This contest is open to ALL AGES! Library staff will judge two winners - one individual and one group - on Halloween! Winners will be notified October 31st and will receive a $25 gift card.

PJ Family Storytime: Monster Bedtime! ~ Monday, October 2 from 7:00—7:45 pm
Even monsters need to go to bed sometime! We’ll share stories about monsters, sing silly songs, make a fun craft, and enjoy a delicious snack! Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Teen Games N@ ~ Thursdays, October 5 & 12 from 3:30—4:30 pm 
Join us on the first and second Thursday of every month for games, snacks, and an awesome time! Stuff your face with pizza while playing games with your friends! We’ll bust out new and classic board games, card games, and the Wii! For students in grades 6—12. No registration necessary—just show up ready for fun!

Anime Club ~ Thursday, October 19 from 3:30 — 4:30 pm
Are you an anime fan? Join fellow enthusiasts on the third Thursday of every month as we watch anime and enjoy Japanese snacks! For students in grades 6—12. No registration necessary—just show up ready for fun!

Calling all Lego fans! Come build with us on the last Wednesday of every month! Build whatever you want and when you’re done we’ll put it up on display. For children ages 3 and up. No registration necessary—just show up ready for fun!

Which was Better: Book VS. Movie Family Book Club ~ Monday, October 30 at
5:30 pm
It’s back! Before our meeting, read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling as a family. At the meeting, we’ll talk about the book and then we’ll watch the movie while snacking on Recommended for families with children ages 5 and up.Please register!

Evan Gealy, local artist, will present a demonstration on pumpkin carving techniques and provide jack o' lantern patterns along with tips and suggestions for doing your own carving! Storytime is back!

Join us for storytime this week for a special Halloween treat!
Feel free to come in costume as we talk about pumpkins, ghosts, trick-or-treating, and other delightfully spooky things!
 
Storytimes will run through the month of November! Don't miss out on all the fun!

Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays, October 29 - November 26 @ 10:30 am AND 1:30 pm - Explore different themes through stories, songs, a craft, and a snack! For children ages 3 1/2 to 6 years old, with or without a caregiver.

Baby Book Nook - Wednesdays, October 30 - November 27 @ 10:30 am - Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more! For children from birth to 2 years old, with a caregiver.

TOT Time - Thursdays, October 31 - November 21 @ 10:30 am - Learn and grow with stories, songs, finger plays, fun activities and a snack! For children ages 2 to 3 1/2 years old, with a caregiver.

October is finally here!

The Pirates are in the playoffs! The leaves are changing colors! Halloween is approaching! October is finally here!

Chick-Fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, October 8th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft, play a silly game, and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal*! No registration necessary - Drop by anytime between 5 - 7 pm! Fun for the whole family! *This program will take place at Chick-fil-A Restaurant located at 461 Clairton Blvd (Route 51).*
 
After School Adventures: Apple Art - Wednesday, October 9th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - It's apple season! Using apples both as inspiration and as a tool, we'll create beautiful art destined to be treasured forever! Please bring a t-shirt or tote bag with you! A $1 donation, per child, is requested. Please register! For children in Kindergarten - 5th grade.
 
PJ Family Storytime: Sail Away - Monday, October 14th from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - Jump in a boat and sail away to storytime! We'll share stories about ships, sing boat songs, play a few traveling games, make a floating craft, and enjoy a scrumptious snack! Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun! Owl Prowl @ the Arboretum - Thursday, October 24th at 6:00 pm - Whooooo's hiding in the woods? Owls! Join Robert Mulvihill, ornithologist at the National Aviary, for a twilight walk where we'll see just how many owls we can spot! Feel free to bring binoculars to help in the search. Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Tired of the same ol' same ol' jack-o-lantern on the front porch?




Come to our Family Night Pumpkin Carving Workshop!
Area artist will treat us to a pumpkin carving demonstration. Bring your own pumpkin, and we will provide new and fresh ideas, tools and light refreshments. Why make a mess at home when you can make a mess at the library!!! Monday, Oct. 26th @ 6:30 p.m. Registration is requested.
