OUTDOOR Family Storytime ~ Tuesdays @ 10:30 am
If the sun in shining, join us at the Pleasant Hills Arboretum to sing, dance, and read stories together while enjoying the beautiful outdoors! If the weather is less than ideal, storytime will be held inside the Pleasant Hills Public Library. Check the Library’s Facebook page for updates. The Pleasant Hills Arboretum is located at 181 West Bruceton Road.

Baby Book Nook ~ Wednesdays @ 10:30 am
Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more!
Geared towards children birth - 2 years old, with a caregiver.

TOT Time ~ Thursdays @ 10:30 am
Learn and grow with stories, songs, rhymes, and more!
Geared towards children 2 - 4 years old, with a caregiver.

Family Craft Night: Spring Pointillism Pictures ~ Monday, May 9 @ 6:30 pm
Are you feeling crafty but don't want to deal with the mess at home? Join us at the library for a fun family painting adventure! Ms. Dani will walk you through step-by-step in the creation of your own tape resist watercolor painting. You can make your name, your initial, various shapes, and many more cool designs with the easy painting technique! Fun for the whole family! Registration is limited AND required.

Zoom Book VS. Movie ~ Monday, May 23 @ 6:00 pm
Grab some snacks and join us on Zoom for a fun chat and a movie! Read Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh as a family then join us as we stream the movie adaptation together. Afterwards, we'll talk about what we liked and didn't like, and most importantly, which was better! Recommended for families with children ages 5 and up. Registration is required.

Lego Club Extravaganza ~ Thursday, May 26 @ 4:00 pm
Calling all Lego fans! Come build with us on the last Thursday of the month! Build whatever you want with our Lego and when you’re done, we’ll put it up on display for all to enjoy. For children ages 3 and up. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun! Space is limited so please try to arrive on time.

April showers bring May flowers...AND OUTDOOR STORYIME!!

***UPDATE: The start date of our Outdoor Storytime Series has been postponed to May 11. Sorry for any inconvenience.***

The weather is finally getting warmer, which means we're finally able to offer an outdoor in-person storytime!! We've missed in-person storytime and are willing to bet you have too! So grab a blanket or chair, put on your favorite face mask, and join Ms. Dani at the Pleasant Hills Arboretum every Tuesday, starting May 11, at 10:30 am for stories, songs, and fun!

Lego fun at home!

The last Wednesday of the month has traditionally been LEGO Club Day at Pleasant Hills Public Library! Unfortunately the Library is still closed so we can't be together to build today.
 Below are some fun resources about LEGO's that you can explore at home.


For our younger friends, check out this awesome collection of LEGO DUPLO videos of favorite rhymes and songs. We particularly enjoyed "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Old MacDonald."

For older friends, check out the LEGO Kids Experience to play online games, watch LEGO videos, and learn about new Lego sets.

Did you know that you can get a FREE LEGO Life magazine subscription if you have children at home that are between 5 - 9 years old? This awesome quarterly magazine features comics, posters, activities, and much more! To learn more, please CLICK HERE.

Online book festivals!!!

If you've ever wanted to attend a book festival but didn't because it was too far away, cost too much, or wasn't feasible for whatever reason....
Now is your chance!!

BookExpo, the publishing industry's leading trade event, is going to be online this year from May 26 - 29 which means that everyone can attend for free!

Traditionally a place where booksellers, librarians, specialty retailers and national chains, publishers and tastemakers could come together, this move to a virtual presentation allows book lovers everywhere to come together to discover the latest titles, authors, technology, trends, and so much more! 

Running May 26 - 29, BookExpo Online will feature authors, experts, and publishing experts sharing their great work and ideas. The first day is full of educational sessions. Later sessions include Adult and Children's Book Dinners where literary giants and celebrity authors will join the conversation! (Here's your chance to hear Judy Blume talk!!!) Don't miss the BookExpo Buzz sessions (Adult, YA, and Middle Grade) to learn about exciting new titles! All the sessions will be on BookExpo's Facebook page so make sure to check it out! 


BookCon, an event where storytelling and pop culture collide, is going virtual this year from May 30 - 31! BookConline will feature sessions with different authors and publishers to give you a first look at debut books and behind-the-scenes peek at some of your favorite titles! Plus there will be ARC giveaways, quizzes, trivia, and more fun yet to be announced! Sessions will be on BookCon's Facebook page so make sure to check it out! EQT Children's Theater Festival @ HOME!

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life as we know it across the world. Schools have been moved to remote learning, libraries and other public institutions have closed their physical doors while throwing their virtual ones wide open, and events and festivals have been cancelled or postponed. It's easy to get discouraged with so much changing, but there's still lots of things to look forward to like the 34th annual EQT Children's Festival happening May 14 - 17, 2020!

The EQT Children's Theater Festival has decided that instead of cancelling this year, they're going to move their awesome annual festival online! They are working with featured performing artists, local artists and organizations, and more to bring us a re-imagined version of the festival that can enjoyed from anywhere! There will be digital engagement opportunities that amplifies the work of local organizations that are creating and distributing content for young audiences and their families! You can expect virtual learning activities, opportunities to engage with featured performing artists, special performances from local performers, and more fun surprises! The festival runs from May 14 - 17, 2020 but you can start the fun now with the Frog Stop Scavenger Hunt!

Guinness World Records AT HOME!

Do you have what it takes to break a WORLD RECORD?!?


The amazing folks at Guinness Book of World Records has created an at-home platform for kids and their families to explore the stories of people who have set world records AND try breaking some of their own! The site includes weekly challenges, #gwrchallenge, where participants have a week to become the best at things like flipping and catching a full deck of playing cards faster than anyone else in the world!There is also a "Try This at Home" series, a Records of the Day podcast, and a cool trivia contest families can play.

Andrew McMeel Publishing, known for publishing such great series as Phoebe and Her Unicorn and Big Nate, is offering a FREE middle-grade eBook every week! All you need to do to access their weekly free eBook is to sign up for their newsletter, which you can do HERE!

They also have a plethora of amazing free resources you can download. 

ABDO Publishing, known for their amazingly vast collection of non-fiction and fiction titles for children and young adults, is offering access to their digital collection for FREE through June 2020. Check out their digital collections HERE.

Capstone Publishing, through their Reading is for Everyone campaign, is offering FREE access to their digital learning products PebbleGo and Capstone Interactive eBooks.

They are also offering tons of great resources for activities, science experiments, and other fun projects you can do at home to support learning.

Family Building Workshop - Thursday, May 17 @ 11:00 am - Enjoy the day off of school at the Library! We'll have a variety of building materials on hand to explore and create with! It's not too late for fun!

There's still time to sign up and be a part of our Stuffed Animal Sleepover happening THIS WEEKEND!!! 
Drop-off your beloved stuffed animal friend anytime during normal operating hours (10am - 4pm) on Friday, May 13th in the Children's Department. Return on Saturday, May 14th at 11:30 am for a joyous reunion filled with stories, songs, crafts, and delicious breakfast snacks! A $2 donation per person is requested at drop-off.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover -  
DROP- OFF:Friday, May 13 anytime between 
10:00 am-4:00 pm PICK-UP BRUNCH STORYTIME: Saturday, May 14 from 11:30-12:30 pm - Ever wonder what your stuffed animals get up to when you're asleep? Drop your stuffed friends off in the Children's Department during normal operating hours on Friday and come back Saturday to see what kind of mischief they got into! We'll celebrate the reunion with stories, songs, crafts, and

Family Movie Night - Thursday, May 14 @ 6:30 PM - Bring a pillow and a blanket and enjoy some popcorn while enjoying a classic cartoon about a flying elephant from 1941! Fun for the whole family!

Preschool STEM: Discovering Dinosaurs - Monday, May 18 @ 3:15 pm - Come discover the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics found in the study of dinosaurs with stories and hands-on activities designed to engage young minds. For children ages 2 - 5, with a caregiver. 

Chick-fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, May 19 @ 5:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft or two and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal!* Drop by anytime between 5 - 7 pm. Fun for the whole family! No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!

May you have fun at the library? Yes, you MAY!!!

Although our weekly storytimes are taking a break in the month of May, there's still tons of fun things to do at the library! Make sure to check out one or more of our upcoming programs!
 
 
Lego Extravaganza Club - Wednesday, April 30th & May 28th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Calling all Lego fans! Join our Lego club! We're building our way through the alphabet - with a different set of letters each month! We'll have Legos you can use, but feel free to bring your own too! For children ages 3 and up. PLEASE REGISTER!
 
Mom & Me Spa Night - Monday, May 5th from 7:00 - 8:00 pm - Children are invited to bring their favorite woman to the library for an exquisite night of pampering! Try out different types of lotion and do your nails, all while relaxing in a peaceful atmosphere. We'll also make a variety of spa staples that you can enjoy at home. Enjoy refreshments while delighting in each other's company. Expect to feel well rested and beautiful! A $2 donation per pair ($1 for each additional child) is requested. For children ages 6 and up, with an adult. PLEASE REGISTER!
 
Evening Baby Book Nook - Tuesday, May 6th from 7:00 - 7:30 pm - Join us in the evening, once a month, for nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more. For children ages birth to 2 years old, with a caregiver. No registration necessary.
 
PJ Family Storytime: To Infinity and Beyond - Monday, May 12th from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - Jump in our rocket ship and take a little trip to outer space! We’ll gaze at the stars while listening to stories, singing spacey songs, playing galactic games, and end our adventure with an alien craft and a snack that’s out of this world! Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun. Family Program. PLEASE REGISTER!
 
Chick-fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, May 13th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft or two and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal!* Drop by anytime between 5—7 pm. Fun for the whole family. No registration necessary.
(*Free Kids Meal with purchase of Adult Combo or Entre Salad)
This program will take place at Chick-fil-A Restaurant located at 461 Clairton Blvd (Route 51).
 
Puppet Play - Wednesday, May 14th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Learn how to make a plethora of really neat puppets using everyday objects. Once we’ve made a cast of cool puppets, we’ll make a mobile puppet stage so you can perform at home. For children in Kindergarten—5th Grade. PLEASE REGISTER!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Have you ever wondered what your stuffed animal friends do while you're asleep?
 
Wonder no more...and join us for our
Stuffed Animal Sleepover
Drop-off: Friday, May 3rd from 10 am - 4 pm
Pick-up Storytime & Breakfast: Saturday, May 4th from 10:30 - 11:30 am
 
Drop your stuffed animal friends off in the Children's Department during normal operating hours on Friday and come back Saturday morning to see what kind of mischief they got into! We'll celebrate the reunion with stories, songs, crafts, and a scrumptious breakfast!
 
A $2 donation per child is requested - collected at drop-off.
Please register! Space is limited!
 
Can't make it in on Friday before 4 pm?!?
Stuffed animal friends may be dropped off before 8:30 pm TONIGHT (Thursday, May 2nd) in the children's department.

May Children, Teen, and Family Programs!

May is full of fun things to do at the Pleasant Hills Public Library!

***Please note that during the month of May there will be NO WEEKLY STORYTIMES. Weekly storytimes will resume the first week in June. Mark your calendars now! While we are taking a break, make sure to take advantage of all the other fun programs happening during the month of May!***
 
Preschool Yoga is back! New day, same time!
Tuesday, April 23rd - May 28th from 1:30 - 2:15 pm
Wear comfy clothes to stretch and unwind while learning fun yoga poses perfect for little bodies! Class runs for six weeks - come to one or all of the sessions! Please bring a large towel or yoga mat with you. Classes will be taught by Alicia Parenti, certified yoga instructor. For children ages 3 - 6 years old, with or without a caregiver. Please register - space is limited!
 
After School Adventures continue!
For children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade. Please register - space is limited!
Stamp Art - Wednesday, May 8th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Almost anything can be turned into a stamp! Learn how to make your own stamps using unconventional materials! Using our new stamps, we'll create beautiful cards just in time for Mother's Day!
 
Clay-tastic! - Wednesday, May 22nd from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Using just a few simple ingredients, you can make your own clay! Together we'll make a few different types of clay and then sculpt them into interesting creations! A $1 donation per child is requested - collected at the event.

T-Shirt Totes - Thursday, May 30th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Do you have any old t-shirts laying around the house that you no longer wear? Turn them into awesome and useful tote bags! Learn some sewing basics while transforming something old into something new! Bring an old t-shirt with you!!
