Storytime break and December fun!

Our weekly storytimes will be taking a short break starting November 21. All of our weekly storytimes will resume the first full week of January 2020! Mark your calendars now!
Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays, resuming January 7, 2020 @ 10:30 am & 1:30 pm
Baby Book Nook - Wednesdays, resuming January 8, 2020 @ 10:30 & 11:30 am
TOT Time - Thursdays, resuming January 9, 2020 @ 10:30 am


**Please note that the Library will close at 5 pm on November 27. The Library will be closed November 28 & 29.

While we don't offer our weekly storytimes in December, we do offer several wonderful seasonal programs! 

PJ Family Storytime: A Snowy Day - Monday, December 2 @ 7:00 pm - Join us for snowy stories, silly songs, a cool craft, and a delicious snack. Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun! Family program - registration requested but not required. Click HERE to register.

Teen Christmas Cookies & Cards - Thursday, December 5 @ 3:30 pm - Make holiday cards to share joy with local nursing home residents and decorate some cookies to take home! A $2 donation per person is requested and collected at the event. For teens in grades 6 - 12. Registration requested but not required. Click HERE to register.

Annual Family Winter Holiday Celebration - Monday, December 9 @ 6:30 pm - Celebrate the winter holidays in style at the Library! Enjoy games, crafts, and snacks from 6:30 - 7:30. Storytime, complete with a visit from the man in red, will start around 7:30! Don't forget to bring your camera! A $2 donation per child and 1/2 dozen cookies per family is requested and will be collected at the event. Family program - please register! Click HERE to register.

Family Storytime at Fresh Thyme Farmer's Market - Monday, December 16 @ 1:30 pm - Join Ms. Dani in the Fresh Thyme Cafe for stories, songs, a craft, and a delicious snack! This program will take place at Fresh Thyme Farmer's Market located at 665 Clairton Blvd (Route 51). Family program - no registration necessary, just show up ready for fun!

Winter Animals with the Allegheny County Park Rangers - Monday, December 16 @ 6:30 pm - How do local animals adapt to our cold winter climate? Some move away, some sleep through it, and some tough it out! Find out who does what with the Allegheny County Park Rangers as we learn all about local wildlife! Family program - space is limited so please register! Click HERE to register.

Lego Extravaganza Club - Wednesday, December 18 @ 4:00 pm - Calling all Lego fans! Come build with us! After we're done, we'll put your creations up on display! For children ages 4 and up - no registration necessary, just show up ready for fun!

Celebrate the Holidays with Barbie - Thursday, December 19 @ 6:00 pm - Susan and Kim Fancsali return to share their extensive Holiday Barbie collection and knowledge! There will also be a fun holiday craft! All ages welcome - space is limited and required. Click HERE to register.

Baby Book Nook - Wednesdays, January 3 - April 25 @ 10:30 & 11:30 am - Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more! For children birth - 2 years old, with a caregiver.

TOT Time - Thursdays, January 4 - April 26 @ 10:30 am - Learn and grow with stories, songs, finger plays, fun activities, and a snack! For children ages 2 - 3 1/2 years old, with a caregiver.

PJ Storytime: Splish, Splash, Taking a Bath! ~ Monday, January 8 from 7:00 —7:45 pm ~ January 8th is National Bubble Bath Day! Let’s celebrate with stories, songs, fun games, a bubbly craft, and a delicious snack! Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Teen Games ’N@ ~ Thursday, January 11 from 3:30 — 4:30 pm ~ Stuff your face with pizza and other delicious snacks while playing a wide variety of board, card, and Wii games while hanging out with friends. For students in grades 6—12. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!

Handprint Flower Fundraiser ~ Monday, January 15 at 6:00 pm ~ Would you like to help the library while also being a part of library history? Join Lynne Mack, local artist, who will be sharing her talents for a spectacular way to leave your mark on the library walls! For a donation of $25, your handprint will grace our space as a beautiful flower. All proceeds benefit our library. Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Parenting Help: Encouraging Speech and Language Development at Home ~ Tuesdays, January 16 & 30 at 6:00 pm ~ Join Jill Shook, a speech-language pathologist, to learn about speech and language development and milestones. During our first session, we’ll cover milestones to watch out for, what speech therapy is, and if your child would benefit. During the second session, we’ll talk about how to encourage speech development at home and answer your questions. Children are welcome to attend with their parents. Questions about these sessions can be sent to jillshookslp@jillshooktherapy.com prior to the program. Please register!

Preschool Dance Party ~ Wednesday, January 17 from 1:30—2:00 pm ~ Come dance your winter blues away at our Library! We’ll dance to a variety of music, use fun props, and work up a sweat while having an awesome time! For children ages 2 and up, with a caregiver. Please register!

Chapter Chat: Teen Book Club ~ Thursday, January 18 at 3:30 pm ~ We’re starting a new book club just for teens! The first book will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. If you haven’t already read this one, read the book prior to our meeting (watching the movie doesn’t count!) then come for lively discussion and snacks related to the book’s theme. Extra copies of each month’s title will be available at the library. For students in grades 6—12. Registration is requested, but not required.

Tail Waggin’ Tutors ~ Monday, January 22 from 7:00 — 8:00 pm ~ Trained therapy dogs will be here hoping to hear a story or two! Practice your reading skills while enjoying the company of some furry friends! Make a fun craft or two while waiting for your turn. For children ages 4 and up — reading ability encouraged but not required. Please register!

Which was Better: Book VS. Movie Family Book Club ~ Monday, January 29 at 6:00 pm ~ Before our meeting, read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum as a family. We’ll talk about the book and then watch the movie while snacking on popcorn and punch! After the movie we’ll decide which we liked better and why. Extra copies of each month’s title will be available at the circulation desk. Recommended for families with children ages 5 and up. Please register!

Which was Better: Book VS. Movie Family Book Club - Monday, November 27 @ 6:00 pm - Before our meeting, read The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling as a family. At the meeting, we’ll talk about the book and then we’ll watch the movie while snacking on popcorn and punch! After the movie we’ll talk about the similarities and differences, then decide which we liked better. Extra copies of each month’s title will be available for checkout at the circulation desk. Recommended for families with children ages 5 and up. Please register!

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

2016 is almost over! While we still have a few programs going on in December, we're really gearing up for 2017! Check out eventkeeper for a full list of programs and make sure to check out our January 2017 program newsletter!

The Pleasant Player’s Readers Theater Presents “A Visit of St. Nick” ~Tuesday, December 20 at 6:30 pm ~ Come listen to this fun radio program, first performed in 1939, about the family from Clement Moore’s famous poem! Peek into the lives of a mouse family as they prepare for a special visitor! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Learn How to Play Chess ~ Thursdays, December 29 from 2:00—3:00 & January 5 from 4:00—5:00 pm ~ Learn the art of chess from a U.S. Candidate Master! David Donohoe will teach us some basic strategy and tactics then we’ll play a few rounds. For children and teens in grades 4 –12. Please register!

No Bake Thanksgiving - Monday, November 21 @ 4:00 pm - Learn how to make tasty treats that don't require an oven just in time for Thanksgiving! We'll make apple pie in a cup, Nutella banana sushi, and chocolate turkey legs, just to name a few! Sample them while you're here and then take the recipes with you to try it again at home! A $2 donation per child is requested and will be collected at the event. For children in Kindergarten - 5th grade. Please register!

Let's Get Messy: A Painting Adventure - Monday, November 28 @ 2:30 pm - Explore the wonders of painting with non-traditional tools in this unique all ages program! Create multiple masterpieces with scented finger paint and unique painting tools such as toothbrushes, marbles, and cotton balls! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Chick-fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, November 29 @ 5:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft or two and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal*! Drop by anytime between 5:00 - 7:00 pm. (*Free kids meal with purchase of adult combo or entree salad). This program will take place at Chick-fil-A Restaurant located at 461 Clairton Blvd (Route 51). Fun for the whole family! No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!

Preschool STEM: Chef Little Red Hen - Thursday, January 22 @ 3:15 pm - Who will help the Little Red Hen in the kitchen? Come discover the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics involved in cooking with stories and hands-on activities designed to engage young minds. For children ages 2 - 5, with a caregiver.

Ballet Dance Party Extravaganza! - Monday, January 26 @ 2:00 pm - Join Miss Sarah Danylo, a dance instructor at Ideal Dance Company, to learn some ballet basics! After mastering a few techniques, we'll have an outrageous dance party! A $2 donation per child is requested. For children ages 3 to 5 years old, with a caregiver.

To celebrate, we're giving away 10 pairs of tickets for the 2015 Pittsburgh International Children's Theater Family Series. Earn a raffle ticket for each child who attends a children's program from January 5 - 15. Drawings will be held on January 8 & 15. Winner need not be present at time of drawing.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We have so many things to be thankful for at the library! We're thankful for books, music, movies, magazines, puzzles, and all our other awesome library materials! We're thankful for our friends and families! We're thankful for our awesome staff! And of course, we're thankful for wonderful patrons like you! 

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, the library will be closing at 5pm today (Wednesday, November 26) and remain closed through Friday, November 28. We will reopen on Saturday, November 29 at 9 am.

After all the celebrations are done, make sure to check out our awesome upcoming programs!

Teen Talk - Saturday, November 29 at 12:00 pm - Come hang out and stuff your face with pizza while playing games with friends! Bring a friend to join in the fun! For teens in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!

TONIGHT!!! Library Scavenger Hunt - Wednesday, April 16 at 6:30 pm - Help us celebrate National Library Week by participating in a fun scavenger hunt throughout the library! Answer questions to get clues to help you find all the hidden items! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Recycled Art - Tuesday, April 22 at 4:00 pm - Celebrate Earth Day at the library by exploring art in a whole new way! We’ll turn trash into treasure! What can you make out of trash and recyclables? Feel free to bring a bag of clean recyclables along with you or just use ours! For children in Kindergarten—5th grade. Please register!

Teen Advisory Group (TAG) - Monday, April 28 at 6:30 pm - Are you in need of volunteer hours? Interested in helping design library programs? Want your voice heard? If you answered yes to any of those questions, or perhaps you said no but are looking for something fun to do anyway, be sure to join TAG and be a part of something special. Each participant will receive one hour of community service and have the opportunity to earn more! For teens in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!

Lego Extravaganza Club - Wednesday, April 30 at 4:00 pm - Calling all Lego fans! Join our new Lego Club! We'll meet the last Wednesday of every month and explore different building categories. Holiday Closings and fun times ahead!

The Pleasant Hills Public Library would like to wish you a very HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!

In honor of the holidays, the Library will be closed on Wednesday, December 24th and remain closed through Thursday, December 26th. We will reopen on Friday, December 27th! We will also be closed for the New Year holiday on Tuesday, December 31st and Wednesday, January 1st. We will reopen on Thursday, January 2nd!

*Glow Fest - Monday, December 30th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm - Celebrate the New Year a day early! We're going to party in the dark with awesome glowing games, crafts, food, and more! Wear neon or other black light receptive clothing to really shine in the night! For teens in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!
 
*Music Together FREE Family Music Class - Thursday, January 2nd at 6:30 pm - Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood program that for over 25 years has been bringing mixed-age families together to sing, dance, and enjoy making music with other families! In this FREE community class, we'll explore the wonders of making music together! For children ages birth to 5, with a caregiver. Happy Fourth of July!

The Pleasant Hills Public Library would like to wish you a very Happy Fourth of July!!!
In honor of the holiday, we will be closing at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 3rd and remain closed on Thursday, July 4th!
We will re-open on Friday, July 5th!
 
Check out these fun things happening after the holiday!
 
PJ Family Storytime: Dino Snores - Monday, July 8 from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - Can you snore like a dinosaur? Get ready for bed with dinosaurs while enjoying stories, songs, games, crafts, and a delicious snack! Wear your PJs! Fun for the whole family! Please register!
 
Afternoon Adventures: Alternative Art - Wednesday, July 10 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - It's amazing what you can use to create art! Discover surprising uses for everyday objects while creating beautiful artwork! A $1 donation per child is requested. For children going into Kindergarten - 5th grade. Please register!
 
Teen Talk - Thursdays, July 11 - August 8 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm - Stuff your face with delicious food while playing games and hanging out with friends! Weekly SRC winner picked each week (winner need not be present). For teens going into grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary.

Happy Easter!

In honor of the Easter holiday, the library will be closed Friday March 29th, Saturday March 30th, and Sunday March 31st.
We hope you have a joyous holiday!

After all the Easter fun is over, join us at the library for some amazing programs happening in April....
 
One Book Every Young Child: The Bus for Us - Monday, April 1st from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - Let's kick off the month of One Book Every Young Child by celebrating transportation in all of its forms! We'll share stories, sing songs, play games, make a craft or two, and enjoy a snack on the go! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

PJ Family Storytime: Itsy Bitsy Spider Climbs Again - Monday, April 8th from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - Oh no! Itsy Bitsy Spider has been washed down the water spout! Join us as we cheer him back up again with stories, songs, games, crafts, and a delectable snack! Wear your PJs! Fun for the whole family! Please register!

Teen Talk - Saturday, April 6th from 1:00 - 2:00 pm - Stuff your face with delicious pizza while enjoying conversation and a variety of games! Have a favorite game? Bring it with you! Tell your friends! For students in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary.

After School Adventures: Exploding Science - Wednesday, April 10th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - What happens when you mix together an acid and a base? They erupt! Come prepared to get messy as we investigate what makes things explode! A $1 donation, per child, is requested. For children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade. Please register!

Weekly storytimes continue through April 11th!

Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays, April 2 & 9 @ 10:30 am & 1:30 pm - Explore different themes through stories, songs, crafts, and a snack! For children ages 3 1/2 - 6 years old, with or without a caregiver.

Baby Book Nook - Wednesdays, April 3 & 10 @ 10:30 am - Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more! For children birth to 2 years old, with a caregiver.

TOT Time - Thursdays, April 4 & 11 @ 10:30 am - Learn and grow with stories, songs, fingerplays, fun activities and a snack! For children ages 2 to 3 1/2 years old, with a caregiver.

There's so many fun things to do at the library!

Happy Holidays!


The Pleasant Hills Library would like to wish you and your family a very happy and joyous holiday season!

In honor of the holidays, we will be closed on  December 24th and 25th. We will be open from 1:00 - 8:30 pm on Wednesday, December 26th. We will also be closed on December 31st and January 1st.
 
2012 might be coming to a close, but 2013 is just around the corner!
