Holiday Closings and fun times ahead!

The Pleasant Hills Public Library would like to wish you a very HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON!!!

In honor of the holidays, the Library will be closed on Wednesday, December 24th and remain closed through Thursday, December 26th. We will reopen on Friday, December 27th! We will also be closed for the New Year holiday on Tuesday, December 31st and Wednesday, January 1st. We will reopen on Thursday, January 2nd!

*Glow Fest - Monday, December 30th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm - Celebrate the New Year a day early! We're going to party in the dark with awesome glowing games, crafts, food, and more! Wear neon or other black light receptive clothing to really shine in the night! For teens in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary - just show up ready for fun!
 
*Music Together FREE Family Music Class - Thursday, January 2nd at 6:30 pm - Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood program that for over 25 years has been bringing mixed-age families together to sing, dance, and enjoy making music with other families! In this FREE community class, we'll explore the wonders of making music together! For children ages birth to 5, with a caregiver. December fun!

It's finally December! Winter is upon us! The holidays are creeping around the bend! Enjoy every moment of the season at the library! Join us for one or more of our fantastic programs happening this month!

Trim the Tree: Handmade Ornaments - Wednesday, December 4th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Learn how to make a plethora of really awesome handmade ornaments you can use to decorate your tree or home! Create unique holiday treasures that can be reused year after year! A $2 donation per child is requested and will be collected at the event. For children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade. PLEASE REGISTER!

Deck the Halls: A Family Holiday Celebration - Thursday, December 5th at 6:30 pm - Help us decorate for the holidays! Join in the celebration of the holiday season with crafts, games, music, stories, snacks, and more! We'll even have a special visit from the man in red! Don't miss out on all the holiday fun! A $1 donation per child, and a half dozen cookies per family, is requested and will be collected at the event. PLEASE REGISTER!

PJ Family Storytime: Gingerbread Family - Monday, December 9th from 7:00 - 7:45 pm - A gingerbread family is running around inside the library! Can you catch them? Find out with stories, songs, games, a craft, and a yummy snack! Wear your PJs and bring a stuffed friend to join in the fun! Fun for the whole family! PLEASE REGISTER!

Chick-fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, December 10th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft, play a silly game, and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal!* Drop by anytime between 5 - 7 pm! Fun for the whole family! No registration necessary. (Free kids meal with purchase of adult combo or entrée salad) This program will take place at Chick-fil-A Restaurant located at 461 Clairton Blvd (Route 51).

Teen Advisory Group - Thursday, December 12th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Are you looking for volunteer hours? Interested in helping design library program? Then join TAG and be a part of something special! Each participant will receive 1 hour of community service and have the opportunity to earn more! We'll start our session off with pizza and volunteer projects within the library. For teens in grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary - just show ready for fun!

Gingerbread House Workshop - Saturday, December 14th at 11:00 am & 1:00 pm - Let your creativity run wild while you use a variety of edible materials to decorate a pre-made gingerbread house! Fun for the whole family! A $3 donation per house decorator is requested and will be collected at the event. PLEASE REGISTER!

Here at Pleasant Hills Public Library, we're thankful for lots of things!
Good health, delicious food, an excellent community who loves and supports its library, and of course, books and people who love them! What about you?

Feel free to come in costume as we talk about pumpkins, ghosts, trick-or-treating, and other delightfully spooky things!

Preschool Storytime - Tuesdays, October 29 - November 26 @ 10:30 am AND 1:30 pm - Explore different themes through stories, songs, a craft, and a snack! For children ages 3 1/2 to 6 years old, with or without a caregiver.

Baby Book Nook - Wednesdays, October 30 - November 27 @ 10:30 am - Nursery and action rhymes, songs, books, and so much more! For children from birth to 2 years old, with a caregiver.

Kick-Off Party: Alien Encounters - Monday, October 14 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Aliens have landed at the library! Explore outer space by making your own alien spaceship and gear to transform yourself into an extraterrestrial! Enjoy games, snacks, and more!
 
Teen Craft: Origami Creatures - Wednesday, October 16 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Learn how to make a variety of silly and spooky creatures using origami!
 
Edible Book Art Contest - Saturday, October 19 - Using anything that's edible, create a piece of delicious art representing your favorite book, literary character, or author! Entries can be dropped off anytime during regular hours on Saturday and the winner will be chosen during our Finale Party.
 
Finale Party: Seeking Unknown Awesomeness - Saturday, October 19 from 2:30 - 3:30 pm - We'll unlock the mysteries of the universe by stuffing our faces with awesome food, playing truly awesome games, and making a few awesome crafts! The winner of the Edible Book Art Contest will be chosen and all entries (with their creator's permission, of course!) will be devoured!

Owl Prowl @ the Arboretum - Thursday, October 24th at 6:00 pm - Whooooo's hiding in the woods? Owls! Join Robert Mulvihill, ornithologist at the National Aviary, for a twilight walk where we'll see just how many owls we can spot! Feel free to bring binoculars to help in the search. Pumpkin Carving Workshop - Monday, October 28th at 6:00 pm - Bring your own pumpkin to carve and leave the mess at the library! Evan Gealy, local artist, will present a demonstration on pumpkin carving techniques and provide jack o' lantern patterns along with tips and suggestions for doing your own carving! After School Adventures: Candy Science - Wednesday, October 30th from 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Candy is not only delicious, but educational too! Music Together: Family Music Class - Saturdays, September 14 - November 16 from 9:30 - 10:15 am
Music Together is an internationally recognized early childhood program that, for over 25 years, has been bringing mixed-age families together to sing, dance, and enjoy making music with other families! Sing songs, play instruments, dance, and have pure fun with your child every week for ten weeks! Enjoy a special tuition offer good thru September 3rd - $160 with NO registration fees for the first child and $120 with NO registration fees for each additional child. Summer Reading Club is halfway over!

We're now in week six of Summer Reading Club! So far, the Wiggling Worms have redeemed over 85 weekly prizes, the Junior Diggers have read over 1300 books, and the Earth Explorers have read for more than 180 hours!

Pirate Tales!

Pirates Tales at the Library!

Attention All Readers between the ages of 4 - 12!
Read your way into the PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates, by participating in Pirate Tales, a program brought to you by the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
 
Every time you finish a book, fill out an entry form here or stop by the library to fill out a paper entry form. After August 2, six lucky children from around Allegheny County will be chosen in a random drawing to receive 2 tickets to a Pirate game, as well as a special storytime with a Pirates celebrity and the Pirate Parrot at PNC Park on September 15, 2013.
 
The Pittsburgh Pirates and Pleasant Hills Public Library are proud to offer this program and encourage the importance of reading. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Happy Fourth of July!

The Pleasant Hills Public Library would like to wish you a very Happy Fourth of July!!!
In honor of the holiday, we will be closing at 5 pm on Wednesday, July 3rd and remain closed on Thursday, July 4th!

Discover surprising uses for everyday objects while creating beautiful artwork! A $1 donation per child is requested. For children going into Kindergarten - 5th grade. Please register!
 
Teen Talk - Thursdays, July 11 - August 8 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm - Stuff your face with delicious food while playing games and hanging out with friends! Weekly SRC winner picked each week (winner need not be present). For teens going into grades 6 - 12. No registration necessary.

MakeShop Workshop TODAY!!!


Join us TODAY from 1-3 pm for a special hands-on program all about electricity! Children's Museum MakeShop staff member Ken Goodwin will be here to help us learn and explore! Drop by and build a circuit, take apart old electronics, and gain a truly unique understanding of electricity! Open to all ages 0 - 22, with or without a caregiver!

Join Chad Gore, local entomologist, at the Arboretum to learn about bugs in our area. A $1 donation per child is requested. If you'd like to take any bugs home, please bring a container to do so! Chick-fil-A Family Craft Night - Tuesday, June 18th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm - Stop by Chick-fil-A on Route 51 to make a fun craft, play a silly game, and enjoy a free kids 4 piece nugget or strip meal*! Summer Reading is in full swing!

We have a Summer Reading Club for every age and reading ability!!! Register at the library or online by visiting our web page. Visit the library to pick up your reading log and goody bag*!
 
Babies and Toddlers are invited to join Wiggling Worms! Earn a weekly prize for completing tasks such as reading together, singing together, and visiting the library! Complete at least eight weeks to earn a free board book!
 
Children not yet reading on their own, or just learning to read, are invited to join Junior Diggers! Earn a raffle ticket for every 10 books you read or listen too! Raffle tickets are good towards any of our awesome weekly raffle prizes! Also, earn an instant prize every time you visit the library as long as you have your reading log with you!
 
Children reading confidently on their own are invited to join Earth Explorers! Earn a raffle ticket for every hour you spend reading! SUMMER'S ALMOST HERE!!!!!

The weather is getting warmer and the days are getting longer. School's almost over....it's ALMOST SUMMER! Which means, it's ALMOST time for SUMMER READING CLUB!

Join us on Saturday, June 8th  from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the Pleasant Kingdom Playground for our awesome, annual, all-ages SUMMER READING CLUB KICK-OFF! Celebrate the kick-off of Summer Reading Club with games, crafts, and ice cream sundaes! Sign up for Summer Reading Club while you’re there and receive a fun goody bag! There’s a program for every age and reading ability! Pleasant Kingdom Playground is located on East Bruceton Road, behind the Pleasant Hills Borough Building.
 
Summer Reading Club runs June 8th - August 10th, 2013
Dig Into Reading is for children from birth through students going into 5th grade.
          Wiggling Worms - A special club for babies and toddlers just learning the joys of reading! Read together to earn weekly prizes!
          Junior Diggers - Children not yet reading on their own, or just learning to read, will want to join this club! Read together to earn raffle tickets and instant prizes for each library check-in!
          Earth Explorers - Children reading on their own earn raffle tickets based on time spent reading and instant prizes for each library check-in!
 
Beneath the Surface is for teens going into grades 6 - 12. Earn raffle tickets for each book you read between June 8th and August 10th! Raffle tickets can then be used towards a variety of awesome prizes that will be chosen weekly throughout the summer! Also, earn instant prizes every time you check-in at the Pleasant Hills Public Library! Prizes range from signed comic books to gift cards for local businesses and everything in between!

 
Groundbreaking Reads is a summer reading club special for adults! Parents, did you know that your kids model your reading habits? Show them how much fun summer reading can be by participating in weekly drawings and great programs!

Returning this year...Questyinz! An online summer reading program that has readers complete tasks, have fun, and earn cyber badges while practicing important educational skills. Open to students going into Kindergarten - 5th Grade. Stop by the library to pick up your special card that will grant you access into this virtual reading universe that opens June 1st!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover

Have you ever wondered what your stuffed animal friends do while you're asleep?
 
Wonder no more...and join us for our
Stuffed Animal Sleepover
Drop-off: Friday, May 3rd from 10 am - 4 pm
Pick-up Storytime & Breakfast: Saturday, May 4th from 10:30 - 11:30 am
 
Drop your stuffed animal friends off in the Children's Department during normal operating hours on Friday and come back Saturday morning to see what kind of mischief they got into! We'll celebrate the reunion with stories, songs, crafts, and a scrumptious breakfast!
 
A $2 donation per child is requested - collected at drop-off.
Please register! Space is limited!
